Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Lake Balaton is the first hotel on Lake Balaton to receive the prestigious Green Globe international sustainability certification, awarded based on the fulfillment of approximately 300 criteria. Mövenpick BalaLand Resort successfully met these standards, setting an example that conscious tourism is not a compromise, but a value.
The family-friendly Mövenpick BalaLand Resort is inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days, and from its opening, it has strived to ensure that comfort and environmental awareness go hand in hand.
“We are proud to be the first hotel on Lake Balaton to earn the Green Globe certification,” said Anikó Ferenczy, the hotel’s Director. “We believe that protecting our environment and communities is a shared responsibility. Our goal is for every guest to feel that what they do for the future of the Earth really matters here.”
Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Lake Balaton follows a strict Sustainability Management Plan (SMP) that focuses on key operational initiatives to minimize environmental impact. In this context, the resort’s four most important objectives are: reducing energy consumption, reducing water consumption, improving waste management, and supporting biodiversity conservation.
Their first objective, in the spirit of combating climate change and global warming, is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As a member of the Accor hotel group, they have set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Accordingly, the hotel building is equipped with multiple energy-efficient and renewable energy systems, including a geothermal heat pump and solar collectors to support the hotel’s energy supply.
Another important goal is the drastic reduction of water consumption: the hotel aims to reduce its water usage by 45% by 2030. To reach this goal, Accor has introduced a linen reuse program, awarding 100 points to Accor card members who stay more than one night and opt out of daily housekeeping or linen changes. Guests are also encouraged to refill their drinking-water bottles from hotel taps, as the local drinking water is among the best quality in Europe.
Situated on the shores of Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Balaton, the resort is working with environmental authorities to showcase biodiversity and preserve habitats. For instance, the hotel places bird silhouettes on glass surfaces to prevent birds from flying into windows.
To implement circular economy practices, the resort has introduced selective waste collection and aims to further reduce the amount of waste produced through incentive and educational programs related to this.
The Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Green Team coordinates numerous additional sustainability initiatives, such as offering bicycle rentals to guests. A key part of the hotel’s eco-conscious operations is the maintenance of drains and sewers using an environmentally friendly BioAmp automated biological drain and sewage treatment system, and thermal insulation film is being installed on windows of south- and southwest-facing rooms.
Future plans for the resort include: increased support for local producers, establishing an on-site composting facility, expanding the electric transport fleet, installing solar panels, and creating a nature trail along the shores of Balaton to showcase the region’s wildlife.
Green Globe is a globally recognized sustainability system based on criteria for sustainable operation and management of tourism businesses. Green Globe is licensed worldwide, headquartered in California, USA, and represented in more than 83 countries. It is an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
